Potluck, Sound Journey and Ecstatic Dance

  • Exchange Christchurch (XCHC) 376 Wilsons Rd N Christchurch New Zealand (map)

After the well received first iteration of this food-sound-dance event, it’s time to do this again. Let's add some extra spice to our weekly potlucks and flow into a sound journey and ecstatic dance after sharing kai, hugs and yarns together.

DETAILS:

Potluck
6.00-7.30pm | open to anyone | FREE
Sound Journey and Ecstatic Dance
7.30pm-9.00pm | limited to 30 people
Koha ($15+ recommended but we don’t want money to be a barrier)

After we've filled our bellies and shared stories together, we will convert the space for sitting/lying down and then dancing together. David Juno will be facilitating and DJing, starting with a brief opening circle and then about 30 minutes of meditative, slow and introspective music (while lying on the heated floor), to allow you to ground yourself, digest the yummy food and recharge for the ecstatic dance that follows. Then we will have about an hour of dance music of various moods and genres that will ramp up towards a high energy crescendo, before easing off again for a final few minutes of calmness and rest. We then close with a circle giving people an opportunity to share a word or gesture about their journeys, should they wish to. Because the dance is not your usual night time gig, we limit numbers so that we can all dance freely and take up space. Make sure you read and internalise the principles below:

PRINCIPLES of ecstatic dance

From 7.30pm, for the musical part of the night, we invite you to:
- be present | no phones. no cameras.
- be embodied | no talking.
- be clear and sober | no intoxicants
- be consensual | listen for a yes. respect a no
- be here | shoes optional
- be free | dance how you want. no judgement. when we step on the - dance floor, we include our whole selves, even the frightened parts - that want to hide

what TO BRING:

- A dish to share for the potluck
- A yoga mat, blanket and pillow for the sound journey
- Light clothes that you feel comfortable dancing in
- A smile
