Inspired by Jin Kim’s own works (collects used and discarded objects from the artist’s daily life and expresses the stories clung to them), Jin tries to implement a diplomatic art project linking two cities (Mullae-dong and Christchurch).

Mullae-dong ironwork factory complex, rare to see somewhere else in Seoul, still keeping the atmospheres of 1950s and 60s.

Christchurch, New Zealand residents who lost their homes in a moment due to the earthquake.

I think both local peoples are connected in the name of ‘recollection’.

I think that a true urban regeneration begins with native residents, who have lived in the region for a long time, having a deep affection for the city. I will make an attempt to remind them of the things that are too routine for the residents to ignore or not recognize. This project will be completed by participants as subject, rather than by an artist.

I will liaison for the participants from the two cities, and hold seminars under the theme of ‘The Stories of Objects’ (tentative title), making progress to artwork. For diplomatic activities linking the two areas, I will arrange a time for the participants from Mullae-dong and Christchurch in the seminar to share the stories related to their objects. I will convey the stories of the things that Mullae-dong participants used for artworks to Christchurch participants in the workshop. Then, Christchurch participants name the titles of the works done by Mullae-dong participants. On the other hand, I will tell the stories of the things Christchurch participants used to make artworks to Mullae-dong participants and the latter name the titles of the works on behalf of the former. In addition, the title tags of the artworks by Christchurch participants are made of iron materials collected in Mullae-dong iron factories and vice versa. Therefore, I will physically connect two cities to each other.

Although they live in different countries and use different languages, I want to give a reason why we all have to think of the cities we live in by communicating our affections for the cities with objects. I hope that urban regeneration will be filled with emotional and spiritual things by artistic activities, not that full of physical things.
