Please join us to celebrate the launch of the Emerging Artist Fund, and enjoy an evening of singing, storytelling, and jazz piano by local artists: Eleanor Jones, Tariq Habibyar, Dominic Spiteri. The event and Emerging Artist Fund is a collaborative initiative put together by Maven Ltd and XCHC.
ELEANOR JONES- SINGER
There are two types of ‘home' singers – those who should stay there and those who don’t realise the scope of their talent. It has been a great privilege to discover and work with ELEANOR JONES – whether in tribute to the 100 Year Anniversary of Jazz legend Billie Holiday or celebrating the contemporary vein of Matt Corby – this is an emerging talent of rare quality.
TARIQ HABIBYAR – STORY TELLER
TARIQ HABIBYAR is a permanent resident of New Zealand born and raised in Afghanistan, a country which for centuries was a center for philosophy, literature, poetry, and art. With a Ph.D. (University of Canterbury), and a Masters in Education (University of Massachusetts), he served as a university lecturer in Afghanistan for six years. He also dared to teach young girls literacy and language when they were forbidden by the Taliban from going to school.
Tariq strives to live each day of his life purposefully, consciously and with dignity. With years of work experience in international development with the UN, USAID, and Doctors without Borders, he has promoted entrepreneurship, education, and health among diverse communities and is vitally interested in stories that express our common humanity.
DOMINIC SPITERI – JAZZ PIANIST
DOMINIC SPITERI is an up-and-coming jazz pianist, based in Christchurch, who is currently completing his degree at Ara Music Arts. He has performed at both the Christchurch Jazz & Blues and the Martinborough Jazz Festival as well as many other concerts and gigs in Christchurch and Wellington, often performing alongside Ara Music Arts jazz graduates and faculty members.
Dominic is involved in many musical projects, including his own piano trio, and more recently a duo with vocalist Georgie Clifford. He draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, though his biggest influences so far have been pianists Keith Jarrett, Robert Glasper and Brad Mehldau.
IANN AN - ARTIST
"As an emerging artist there is no complete solidity, certainty, or clarity in our identity." - IANN AN
Iann An investigates her identity through figurative paintings using acrylics as her main media and video work inspired by French New Wave. Her exhibition, “Unripened Habit”, is an investigation of identity as an emerging artist. Identity in simple words can be defined as being who or what a person is. It develops over time and can evolve, sometimes drastically, depending on what directions we take in our life. Her exhibition begins on Sunday Oct 9th @ 6:30 and will remain on display through our Emerging Artists event on the Oct 14th.
